Having seen the beautiful film photos of Spain, Iceland, Norway, Italy and so on, I’ve always marveled at the shear clarity of the scenes. The fresh crispness of the silent cold Iceland plains, the hills of Spain, or cliffs of Ireland come through. Each photo refreshing. But photos of Calcutta, oh Calcutta, always appeared grimy. And sure enough so did mine. And a moment of thought later, the dust in the sky hit me. The city is full of dust, especially so in winter. Dust and a healthy smattering of grime. One realizes it in photos and after a long stay in the US. We get used to it in a few weeks and the soon the winter of Calcutta is an enjoyable place in time to be.
